Which reference should we use?

The published frame-size tables are separate for men and women, and the thresholds genuinely differ. This is not a cosmetic switch.

“You’re big-boned” is one of those phrases that has been used so often as a euphemism that people have stopped believing it describes anything real. It does. Skeletons genuinely differ in width, the difference is measurable in about a minute, and it explains a great deal about why clothes fit you the way they do.

What it does not explain is your weight. Those are two different questions, and most of the confusion around frame size comes from running them together.

Three ways to measure it

All three are established published methods. They get more reliable as they get more fiddly, and the calculator above will run any of them.

Two seconds
The finger test

Thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist. Overlap means small, touching means medium, a gap means large. It works because you are comparing your wrist to your own hand, which is already scaled to you.

Two minutes
Wrist and height

Measure around the narrowest part of your wrist, just past the wrist bone, then divide your height by it. This is the usual method and the one the calculator leads with.

Fiddly, but best
Elbow breadth

The distance across the two bones at your elbow, arm bent to a right angle, palm facing you. Least affected by soft tissue, and what clinicians actually use. Easier with a second pair of hands.

Why two calculators give you different answers

Here is something worth knowing before you trust any frame-size result, including ours. There are two methods in wide circulation for the wrist, and they disagree with each other on about one case in six.

We checked this properly rather than assuming: across 3,315 plausible height and wrist combinations for women, the height-to-wrist ratio and the widely reproduced wrist table return the same verdict 83% of the time. Twenty of those combinations disagree by two whole categories — one method says small frame, the other says large.

The problem is the table, and it is a design flaw

The wrist table sorts height into three coarse bands. At the 5 ft 2 in boundary, the window that counts as a medium frame jumps from 5.5–5.75 in of wrist straight to 6–6.25 in. That is a half-inch discontinuity, and it produces this:

Two whole categories, from a difference in height you could create by standing up straighter. Four of the wrist sizes we swept do this at that one boundary. A reference that behaves like this at its edges is not measuring a skeleton; it is measuring which side of an arbitrary line you happened to land on.

The ratio method has no such cliff, because it is continuous — nothing jumps anywhere. That is why our calculator leads with it, reports the table as a second opinion, and tells you plainly when the two disagree instead of quietly picking one.

The men’s table has holes in it

If you are measuring a man, it is worse. The published wrist table gives exactly one band — “height over 5 ft 5 in” — and writes its smallest category as a range of 5.5 to 6.5 in rather than as “anything below”. So:

  • Every man 5 ft 5 in or shorter falls outside the table completely. There is no band for him.
  • Any wrist under 5.5 in drops out of the bottom of the smallest category, so a genuinely fine-boned man gets no answer at all.
  • 6.5 in appears in both the small and medium categories, and 7.5 in in both medium and large.

Swept across a plausible range, 38.8% of men fall outside that table entirely. Our calculator says so when it happens rather than inventing a category, and the ratio method it leads with covers everybody.

Even the ratio thresholds are contested

One more layer of honesty. Two sets of ratio thresholds are in common circulation for women — one puts the small-frame boundary at 11.0 and the other at 10.9 — and they disagree on 7.1% of the same sweep. That is why the calculator flags you as borderline when you land near an edge, instead of printing one word and implying a precision that does not exist.

Elbow breadth, by height

These are the medium-frame windows. Narrower than the window is a small frame; wider is a large frame. Centimetre values here are converted from the original inch measurements rather than copied — four of the ten centimetre ranges as usually published do not match the inches they claim to convert.

Note that the women’s table has five rows but only three distinct windows — the first two are identical, as are the third and fourth. It is less precise than it looks.

What frame size is actually good for

Not your weight. Clothes.

Frame size is a proportion, and proportion is the thing that decides whether a garment looks deliberate on you or looks borrowed. Two women the same height and the same dress size, one narrow-framed and one broad-framed, need genuinely different things from a jacket — and neither of them is going to find that out from a size label.

Small frame

Scale down. Wide lapels, chunky knits and oversized bags read as the bigger object and wear you. Narrow shoulder seams matter more than anything else on the garment.

Medium frame

Ready-to-wear is drafted for you. Genuinely useful to know: when something does not fit, it is the cut rather than your proportions, so stop sizing up out of habit.

Large frame

Scale up rather than covering up. Substantial fabrics and generous collars balance you; fine detail looks undersized. Buy for the shoulders and have the waist taken in.

The single most useful thing on that list, whatever your frame: the shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder bone. It is the one measurement that cannot be altered cheaply, and it is the one almost everybody ignores in favour of how the waist feels.

Frame size, BMI and weight charts

Frame size exists at all because of the old Metropolitan Life height and weight tables, which listed a different desirable weight for small, medium and large frames at the same height — often a spread of fifteen to twenty pounds. BMI dropped that distinction entirely, so two people of the same height with visibly different skeletons are judged against one number.

That is a real limitation of BMI, and it is worth knowing. It is also a modest one, and it gets overstated in both directions. Frame size explains part of the variation between people, not most of it. It is a reason to hold BMI loosely rather than a reason to dismiss it, and a large frame does not turn an unhealthy weight into a healthy one any more than a small frame makes a normal weight a problem.

If you want a number that tells you something useful about your health, your waist measurement and how you feel doing ordinary things will both beat this one. And your doctor will beat any calculator on the internet, including this one.

What changes after 50

Your frame does not. Bone width is settled by your twenties and stays put. But two things quietly change the answer, and both are worth understanding.

Height loss moves the number without moving a bone

The ratio is your height divided by your wrist. Lose height and the ratio falls — toward “large frame” — while your skeleton is completely unchanged.

The effect is real but small, and it is worth being precise rather than alarming about it. For an average wrist, each inch of height lost drops the ratio by about 0.17, when a whole category spans 0.9. Crossing a category outright would take roughly five inches of height loss, which essentially nobody experiences. Most people lose one to two inches between forty and seventy.

So it only flips your result if you were already sitting on a boundary. If you were measured decades ago and told something different, this is the likeliest explanation — and the older answer was the more accurate one.

Posture changes clothes more than frame does

A rounded upper back moves where a shoulder seam wants to sit, and no amount of sizing up will fix it — a different neckline or a good alteration will. A widening ribcage and a settling waistline after menopause are ordinary, and they are not frame changes either. Buy for the body you have now and stop treating a remembered size as the target.

Common questions

Is “big-boned” a real thing?

Yes, and it is measurable. Skeletons differ in width, and the difference between a small and a large frame at the same height is visible in the wrist, the elbow and across the shoulders. The phrase has also been used as a euphemism for a long time, which is why people are sceptical of it. Both things are true at once, and measuring is what tells you which applies to you.

Does a large frame mean stronger bones?

No. Frame size describes how wide your bones are, not how dense or strong they are. It should not be read as reassurance about osteoporosis in either direction. If bone health is on your mind, that is a conversation with your doctor and a scan, not a tape measure.

Can my frame size change?

Not meaningfully. Bone width is fixed in adulthood. What changes is everything around it — soft tissue, posture, and your height — and height loss will nudge the calculated answer even though the skeleton underneath is identical. That is a quirk of the formula rather than a change in you.

Which method should I trust if they disagree?

The elbow, if you can measure it accurately, because it carries the least soft tissue. Otherwise the ratio, because it has no cliff edges. If the two wrist methods disagree with each other, the honest reading is that you are between two categories rather than firmly in either — that is genuinely what a disagreement means, and it happens to roughly one person in six.

How accurate are these tables really?

Treat them as a rough sort into three buckets, not a precise measurement. They were built decades ago on mostly white American populations, frame proportions genuinely differ between ancestries, and the categories are broad. That is fine for the purpose it is good at — understanding how clothes sit on you — and too crude for anything medical.

Are my measurements saved?
